1986 CFL SEASON
< 1985 1987 >

The CFL expanded to 18 games, and the playoffs introduced the 'Cross-over rule' whereby the 4th place team in one division could take the place of the 3rd placed team in the other division if they had earned more points in the regular season standings. The four qualifiers in one division played Semi-Finals and a Final; whilst the other division played a home and home series, total points-2-game playoff (last used in the 1972 CFL Season. However, this was only used for the 1986 CFL Season.

Montreal Concordes returned as the Alouettes, that conincided with the original Alouettes' 40th anniversary.
