NFL rules also require the designated home team for each international game to have their home stadium reserved for use in the event that a game cannot be played at the international site, which happened in 2018 when the Estadio Azteca (Mexico City, MX) was deemed unsuitable because of the state of the field and so the Los Angeles Rams played the planned game at home.
With the expansion of the season to 17 regular season games, each team will play an international game once every 8 years.
Games are played in London, Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich on rotation), Mexico (Mexico City which is expected to return in the future due to repairs at its host stadium), Sao Paulo (since 2024), Spain (2025) and Ireland (2025). Australia (Melbourne) will join the list in 2026.

International marketing and expansion

The NFL announced the International Home Marketing Areas initiative, where 19 NFL teams have been selected to freely market their team across eight countries, starting in January 2022. In May 2022, two more countries were added to the list of international marketing. In 2023, the league added Austria, Switzerland, France and Ireland. Teams were selected based on their proposals submitted to the NFL, along with the performance of their marketing domestically. The following teams were granted the five-year initiative that will allow marketing methods such as in-person events, sponsorships, and merchandise sales, as well as a high priority to compete in the countries granted in:

Prior to 2017, the London Games were called the International Series. I have attended games in 2007, 2008, 2013 (Oct 27) and 2016 (Oct 2). My friend, Jon Botham, attended Game 7 (Pittsburgh Steelers vs Minnesota Vikings) in 2013. Home teams have a record of 7-10-1. Game 17 became the first game to end in a tie. There have been 30 games played in London, as of the 2021 season.

Games have been played at the Estadia Azteca in Mexico City since 2016, with the 2018 game being deemed unsuitable because of the state of the field at the Estadio Azteca (Mexico City, MX), and so the Los Angeles Rams played at home. There have only been 4 games so far due to the 2018 game being moved back to the USA and the 2020 game being cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and no game since 2022.
