Birmingham Barracudas
LEGION FIELD
Birmingham Barracudas (Birmingham,AL,USA) were part of the CFL's failed expansion into the USA in the mid-1990s and played in the South Division with fellow American teams (Baltimore Stallions,Memphis Mad Dogs,San Antonio Texans and Shreveport Pirates.
At first, attendance at Legion Field was recognised as very good at the start of the season. However,as CFL games are traditionally played on Thursdays,Fridays and Saturdays,as a way of avoiding competition on television with the National Football League. Their owner,Art Williams, asked the league to switch to their home games on Sunday in September and October to avoid competition from the high school and college football season started, especially Alabama or Auburn games which are played on Saturdays. Despite this, their last four home games did not attract more than 9,000 people, and looked even smaller than that since Legion Field seated over 83,000 people at the time.
