Memphis Mad Dogs
LIBERTY BOWL
In 1993,Memphis Hound Dogs (Memphis,TN,USA) owned by Fred Smith (owner of FedEx),and fronted as a group made up of former Memphis Showboats owner William Dunavant and the estate of Elvis Presley) tried to land a team in the NFL. The NFL passed over the team in favour of Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars in 1993. Due to this,Fred Smith proposed his team to the CFL and was the richest group in CFL history at the time. The CFL even considered selling Calgary Stampeders or Hamilton Tiger-Cats to Smith. However,Smith was granted an expansion franchise instead but Elvis Presley's estate was no longer involved. The team was renamed the Mad Dogs through a name-the-team contest.
The Mad Dogs did not perform well on the field and ended the 1995 season with a 9-9 record and one game out of the playoffs. They folded in December 1995 and made way for the relocated Houston Oilers (Tennessee Oilers) in 1998.
