Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers played their first season in 1995 as an expansion team along with the Jacksonville Jaguars to bring the NFL to 30 teams. The team was originally owned by North Carolina native Jerry Richardson who was a former wide receiver of the Baltimore Colts and had used his 1959 NFL Championship bonus to co-found the Hardee's restaurant chain and would later become the president and CEO of TW Services. Carolina was chosen as it would represent both North and South Carolinas rather than a single city like Charlotte where the team is based.

Whilst their current stadium was being built, the team played at Memorial Stadium, home of the Clemson Tigers college football team in Clemson, SC. The Panthers have yet to win a Super Bowl but have appeared in two (XXXVIII and more recently 50 in the 2015 season).

Panthers was chosen as the team name as it signified what Mark Richardson, president of the team and son of team owner Jerry Richardson, thought a pro football team should be which is powerful, sleek and strong just like a panther.
