Miami Manatees |
Miami Manatees (Miami,FL,USA) were originally a proposed expansion team for the 1996 season before a decision was made to relocate the Las Vegas Posse,at a cost of $1.45m opposed to a $3m expansion fee, after deals to relocate the team to Jackson,MS and Los Angeles,CA fell through. However, the team would not come to fruition after the CFL suspended its US operations in Spring 1996.
The team announced that a portion of ticket sales would go to a fund to support Florida's manatees and their mascot was called Gamzo. However, the team needed to sell 20,000 to 25,000 tickets per game to break even. An exhibition game at the Orange Bowl was played between the Baltimore Stallions and Birmingham Barracudas which drew an announced crowd of 20,250..
If the team had played, they would have been the only CFL team to compete directly with the NFL,since the Baltimore Stallions had refused and moved to Montreal as its planned relocation to Houston was not possible.
