EASTERN CONFERENCE
From 1933-1949, this was called the Eastern Division, before being renamed the American Conference from 1950-1952 before being renamed the Eastern Conference from 1953-1996 and then splitting into two divisions from 1967-1969, prior to the AFL-NFL Merger in 1970.
The Division champions played in the Eastern Conference Championship Game for a place in the NFL Championship Game who would then represent the NFL in the Super Bowl.Conference Divisions

The division was formed with Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins along with the New Orleans Saints as an expansion team.
New Orleans Saints was a member of this division in 1967 and 1969, and being replaced by the New York Giants in 1968.
New York Giants returned to this division when it became the NFC East in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL Merger.

The NFL Century Division had four teams in each season; however, it had five different members: Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and St. Louis Cardinals. In 1967 and 1969 the four teams were the Browns, Cardinals, Giants, and Steelers. For the 1968 season, the Giants were placed in the Capitol Division, with the Saints switching to the Century.
