Super Bowl
< Playoffs
Origins
The game began after the 1966 season (the “Super Bowl” name was adopted the following year) and was originally contested between the AFL and NFL Champions until the merger in 1970.
The Lombardi Trophy
The winning team receives the Lombardi Trophy, named after Green Bay Packers Head Coach Vince Lombardi, who won the first two Super Bowls.
Season vs. Game Year
The year shown refers to when the game was played and crowns the champion of the previous season. For example, the 2015 Super Bowl (XLIX) represents the 2014 season. Super Bowl L was branded as Super Bowl 50 for the 2015 season only.
Team Streaks
Seven teams (Dallas, Denver, Green Bay, Miami, New England, Pittsburgh and San Francisco) have won consecutive Super Bowls, and six of them have also come close to a third straight title. Buffalo lost four consecutive Super Bowls (XXV–XXVIII), while Denver (XXI–XXII) and Minnesota (VIII–IX) each lost two in a row.
Host Cities
Over half of all Super Bowls (27 of 52) have been hosted by three regions: New Orleans (10), Greater Miami (10) and Greater Los Angeles (7). Host cities are not required to use their NFL team’s stadium, which has occurred nine times. Los Angeles’ last five Super Bowls were played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, though none have been held there since 1993.
Climate & Stadiums
Super Bowls are typically played outdoors in climates averaging above 50°F (10°C) unless the venue has a fixed or retractable roof. Only five have been held in northern cities: Detroit/Pontiac (5), Minneapolis (2) and Indianapolis (1).
Home Super Bowl Winners
Only two teams have won a Super Bowl in their home stadium: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (LV) and Los Angeles Rams (LVI).
Scheduling Changes
With the move to a 17‑game regular season in 2021, New Orleans’ scheduled Super Bowl LVIII was reassigned to Las Vegas due to a conflict with Mardi Gras. New Orleans will instead host Super Bowl LIX.
Host Year
The host year refers to when the city or region staged the event and corresponds to the previous NFL season (e.g., 2022 hosts the 2021 season’s Super Bowl).
Pre-1970
The NFL hosted its own Championship Game, in which from 1966-1969, the NFL Champions played the AFL Champions.

NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (1933-1969)
There were no Playoffs held prior to 1933, and from 1966 to the merger with the AFL in 1970 the NFL Champion played the AFL Champion in the Super Bowl. The NFL Championship Game was re-named the National Football Conference Championship Game from 1970.
