WESTERN CONFERENCE
From 1933-1949, this was called the Western Division, before being renamed the National Conference from 1950-1952 before being renamed the Western Conference from 1953-1996 and then splitting into two divisions from 1967-1969, prior to the AFL-NFL Merger in 1970.
The Division champions played in the Western Conference Championship Game for a place in the NFL Championship Game who would then represent the NFL in the Super Bowl.

The division was originally formed in 1967 as part of the Western Conference and was called the Central Division. With the completion of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970, the Western Conference was renamed to the National Football Conference (NFC), with the Central Division retaining its name and styled as the NFC Central. In 2002, the division was renamed to the NFC North.

The Coastal Division was formed with four inaugural members. The Baltimore Colts, the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers joined from the Western Division, while the Atlanta Falcons joined from the Eastern Division.
The Coastal Division adopts the NFC West after the AFL–NFL merger. Baltimore moved to the AFC East and New Orleans moved from Capitol Division.
