USFL (2022-2023)
UNITED STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE (USFL) kicked off in April 2022 and, in 2024, merged with the XFL to form the United Football League. This was the fourth attempt to launch a league under the USFL name, following previous versions in 1945, 1983 (which operated until 1985 and did not play its planned 1986 season), and 2010.
The USFL featured eight teams. In 2022, all games were played in Birmingham, Alabama. For the 2023 season, the league expanded to new hubs in Birmingham, Canton (OH), Detroit (MI), and Memphis (TN).
The league was divided into two divisions (North and South). Each team played a ten‑game schedule with no bye weeks, facing each division rival twice (home and away) and each team from the opposite division once.
The playoffs consisted of the top two teams from each division, with division champions hosting their respective Division Championship Game, followed by the USFL Championship Game.
For the 2024 season—announced on 28 September 2023—the newly merged UFL incorporated three USFL teams: the Birmingham Stallions, Memphis Showboats, and Michigan Panthers (teams marked with a “*”). The Houston Gamblers were also set to join but were rebranded as the Houston Roughnecks.
