XFL was the 3rd incarnation of the league, in which it played 1 season in 2001 and part of a season in 2020 due to the Coronovirus Pandemic.
The XFL was made up of 8 teams, including 5 returning cities from the shortened 2020 season and 3 teams relocating to Las Vegas, Orlando and San Antonio.
Las Vegas and Orlando previously had teams in the 2001 XFL and San Antonio previously hosted a team in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019, another league that played a part season.
The sole 2023 season ran from February to April, with each team playing a ten-game regular season, and four progressing to the playoffs to crown a season champion. It merged with the USFL (2022-2023) to form the United Football League for the 2024 Season.
