Tyneside Mariners |
Tyneside Mariners represent the boroughs of North Tyneside and South Tyneside along with Gateshead and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Their main rivals are the Yorkshire Vikings.
They play at the home of the Premier League's Newcastle United with a capacity of 52,404.
Newcastle hosted the 2020 Championship Game.
The Mariners get their name from the rich maritime history in the North-East of England. Local team South Shields FC also use Mariners as their nickname. Their team colours are based on the Pittsburgh Panthers college football team, where some of my relatives lived in the 19th Century, and their logo is based on the Navy Midshipmen college football team. My family has a long history in the maritime industry and the name pays homage, more details can be found here.
Prior to 2020, they had the longest playoff drought having last appeared in 2015, a total of 4 seasons, but qualified in 2020.
