Edmonton Elks

Edmonton Elks (Edmonton,AB) (formerly called the Edmonton Eskimos and briefly the Edmonton Football Team/ EE Football Team) were founded in 1949,taking the name from previous incarnations of the Eskimos dating back to 1895.

They borrowed uniforms from the University of Alberta Bears college football team who folded prior to the 1949 season.

They are known as one of three "community owned" teams in the CFL (owned by local shareholders) along with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

They are recognised as the most successful CFL franchise in the modern era (since 1954),having won the Grey Cup 14 times (including 3 times from 1954-1956 and unmatched five consecutive wins from 1978-1982 and most recently in 2015. This record places them second overall behind the Toronto Argonauts, who have won seventeen Grey Cups (with seven of those since 1954). They hold a North American professional sports record by qualifying for the playoffs 34 consecutive years between 1972-2005.

The Team reviewed their 'Eskimos' name as Inuit leaders deam the name 'Eskimo' as a racial slur, and subsequently dropped the name to become the Edmonton Football Team/EE Football Team with Elks now their new name.
