Shreveport Pirates

Shreveport Pirates (Shreveport,LA,USA) were owned by Bernard Glieberman and his son Lonnie, then owners of the Ottawa Rough Riders, who wanted to relocate the struggling francise but the CFL rejected this proposal. The CFL gave the Pirates to the Gliebermans and new ownership took over the Ottawa Rough Riders Rough Riders name, colours, and history.

It took the Pirates, until week 15 of the 1994 season to record their first win by beating fellow American team Sacramento Gold Miners 24-12.

Despite Shreveport being located in a market that severed four major college teams (LSU,Texas,Texas A&M,and Arkansas),they were based far enough away to have a strong fan support despite their dreadful on-field record.

The Gliebermans planned to relocate to Norfolk,VA but talks were called off when the Gliebermans faced several lawsuits in Shreveport. The Ark-La-Tex Football Association were interested in buying the Birmingham Barracudas and relocating to Shreveport. However, the CFL called time on their American experiment following the 1995 season. The Gliebermans eventually re-emerged in the CFL owning the Ottawa Renegades. Like their previous efforts, the Renegades were a failure.
