League Philosophy
The United Football League (UFL) is built for fast-paced, aggressive, high-action football. Its rules are designed to reduce downtime, increase scoring, and create more meaningful plays.
Scoring Rules
- Touchdown: 6 points
- Extra Points:
- 1 point — Kick from the 33-yard line
- 2 points — Scrimmage play from the 2-yard line
- 3 points — Scrimmage play from the 8-yard line
- Field Goal: 3 points
- 4-Point Field Goal: Any made kick from 60+ yards
- Safety: 2 points
Catching Rules
- One Foot In Bounds: A legal catch requires only one foot in bounds.
Offensive Rules
- Tush Push Ban: Offensive players may not push the ball carrier forward.
- No Punting Inside Opponent’s 50:
- Punts are not allowed from the +49 and in.
- Rule still applies even if a penalty moves the ball back behind midfield.
- Exception: Punting is allowed after the two-minute warning of each half.
Kickoff Rules
- Kickoffs are taken from the 30-yard line.
- Designed to increase returns and reduce touchbacks.
Overtime Rules
- Shootout Format: Each team receives three alternating attempts from the 5-yard line.
- If tied after three rounds, teams continue alternating attempts until a winner is determined.
- A coin toss decides which team goes first.
Coin Toss Procedure
- The visiting team calls the coin toss before the game.
- A separate coin toss is held before overtime.
UFL 2026 Rule Updates
The following changes apply beginning with the 2026 UFL season:
- 4-Point Field Goal: 60+ yard kicks remain in effect.
- No Punts Inside Opponent’s 50: Updated with a new two-minute warning exception.
- Tush Push Ban: Fully prohibited in all situations.
- Overtime: Shootout format clarified with coin toss procedure.
- Kickoffs: Standardised at the 30-yard line.
- Catch Rule: One foot in bounds remains the standard.
