Rules
< BFL Home
The British Football League (BFL) uses a unique system based on the performance of NFL affiliates. These rules define how standings, playoffs, overtime, and bye weeks are handled each season.
This current version reflects changes to be implmented for the 2026-2028 BFL seasons which include the BFL Draft, Scheduling, NFL affiliation rules and league expansion.
1. League Structure
Since 2025, the BFL has operated as a 16‑team league across the United Kingdom, divided into two conferences — the British Conference and the United Conference — each containing two divisions of four teams.
Expansion to a 24‑team league is under review. This would introduce realignment into three divisions per conference and may require teams to move divisions.
Prior to 2025, historical division alignments can be found under the BFL Teams page.
2. League Membership
The league will expand from a 16-team league to a 24-team league with the 2028 BFL season.
The BFL operates with a permanent cap of 24 teams, as defined in the Expansion Cap section. This ensures competitive balance and maintains clear playoff access.
2.1 Membership Limit
The BFL shall not expand beyond 24 teams under normal operations. This limit preserves:
- Competitive integrity
- Distinct regional identities
- Balanced divisional alignment
- A meaningful path to the postseason
- A stable national footprint
2.2 Expansion Restrictions
Expansion beyond the 24‑team cap is prohibited unless all of the following conditions are met:
- A full structural review of conferences and divisions
- A revised postseason format
- Balanced divisional alignment
- A new alignment plan that maintains competitive balance
If these conditions are not met, the BFL remains closed to expansion.
NFL is reported as reviewing the possibility of expanding to a 34-team league, although no timeframe has been announced, the BFL will review the viability of expanding beyond 24 teams if the NFL expansion goes ahead.
3. Teams
3.1 Team Names
Team naming rules are detailed under each Division page. The BFL maintains strict standards to ensure clarity, originality, and consistency.
Name Format
Each team name must include:
- A geographic identifier (city, region, or country)
- A unique nickname
- Distinctive and easily recognisable identity
3.2 Geographic Requirements
The geographic portion of a team name must:
- Be a real, identifiable place within the United Kingdom
- Not duplicate another team’s location
Yorkshire currently hosts three teams - Humberside Destroyers (based in Hull and representing East Yorkshire and East Lincolnshire), Sheffield is based in South Yorkshire but represents its local region and Yorkshire Vikings (based in Leeds), all represent a Yorkshire county but none cross-over except for Yorkshire Vikings.
Scotland is represented by both Caledonian Knights (based in Glasgow) and Scottish Claymores (based in Edinburgh) due to distinct cities and regional identities.
3.3 Nickname Restrictions
Nicknames must adhere to the following:
- Must be unique within the BFL
- Must not duplicate or closely resemble team names or cities/regions
- Must not infringe on trademarks of major UK sports teams
- Defunct team names are encouraged in line with other BFL teams although logo will be modernised or changed to align with the city/region name.
Prohibited categories include:
- Names identical or nearly identical to major UK sports teams
- Names conflicting with local professional teams
- Names implying league ownership or official status
- Names referencing real military units or political groups
- Names deemed inappropriate, confusing, or offensive which includes previous names that were dropped for this reason such as Indians, Redskins, Eskimos and similar names or variants
3.4 Team Suitability & Stadium Capacity
All BFL clubs must meet strict suitability and stadium criteria to ensure professional standards and consistent fan experience as if it was a real team.
Relocation may occur if a stadium becomes unsuitable, demolished or redevelopment requires a temporary or permanent move.
If the new stadium move means that the team is no longer in the catchment area of its current city/region, then the team will either change its city/region name and may change its nickname if required.
All clubs must play in a stadium with a minimum capacity of 10,000 (seated or standing) as per current professional leagues' requirements.
3.4 Divisions
Divisions will only be renamed if the teams are based in a particular region.
Teams will be Locality will be used to identify new teams to play in a region rather than focusing on a direct rivalry that would benefit one team but not the division as a whole.
4. BFL Draft
The full history of NFL affiliates assigned to BFL teams can be found on the BFL Draft page.
Although, previously called NFL Affiliation Rules, BFL rebranded these as the BFL Draft to reflect the 2026 BFL season and to align with other professional Gridiron Football leagues like the CFL, NFL and UFL.
2015–2026
The BFL Draft assigns NFL affiliates based on the previous NFL season’s playoff field:
- 7 AFC playoff teams
- 7 NFC playoff teams
- Next‑best non‑playoff team in each conference
2027 Onwards
Top NFL seeds are matched to top BFL seeds (#1–#8 per conference) a sper previous NFL season standings. This replaces alphabetical matching and strengthens competitive balance.
From 2028, the NFL affiliates pool will be made up of the following:
- 7 AFC playoff teams
- 7 NFC playoff teams
- Five next‑best non‑playoff teams in each conference
4.1 Expansion Draft
This will apply when expansion teams are to be added.
- New teams receive NFL affiliates outside the seeded pool, matched alphabetically.
- Expansion teams join the seeded system in their second season.
5. Scheduling
The BFL plays a 10‑game, 11‑week season to ensure the champion is crowned within the same calendar year.
From 2025-2027, the BFL Playoffs conclude by NFL Week 14.
From 2028, the BFL Playoffs will conclude by NFL Week 15, with the adition of the Conference Wild Card Playoffs.
In the future, if the BFL Playoffs do expand then they will need to conclude by Week 17 to ensure the champion is crowned within the same calendar year.
6. Standings
6.1 Final Standings Calculation
Final standings are determined after NFL Week 11 using:
- NFL affiliate win–loss record
- NFL tiebreakers
Since 2025, BFL standings have been fixed to align with better with NFL standings.
Prior to 2025, BFL Standings incorporated Net Points (NP) to determine final standings in which a team with a high NP would be placed higher in the standings when deciding ties in team records.
6.2 Tie Rules
If an NFL affiliate finishes with a tie:
- If only one affiliate has a tie, that team receives an automatic win.
- If multiple affiliates tie, NFL tiebreakers apply, with priority to BFL division champions.
This has only happened once where a team has received an automatic win and no other team has also had a tie in the same season:
2021 BFL season - Week 10: Tyneside Mariners got the win because their NFL affiliate Pittsburgh Steelers tied in their Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions who were not affiliated with a BFL team, and also no other NFL affiliate drew in their games.
7. Playoffs
7.1 Overtime Procedure
If the full‑time score is tied:
- Add quarter‑by‑quarter scores sequentially.
- If still tied, add individual scoring plays.
- Continue until a winner is determined.
This has happened twice:
2024 North Division Semi-Final
Caledonian Knights (affiliated with the Baltimore Ravens) had a bye week in Week 14 so automatically used their Week 13 (1 December) result.
2023 BFL Championship — tied 33–33.
OT used 1st‑quarter scores: Caledonian Knights (3) & Sussex Pirates (7).
Final: Sussex Pirates 40–36.
7.2 Bye Weeks During Playoffs
If an NFL affiliate has a bye, the most recent played week is used.
Seeding Changes
From 2026: Division champions receive seeds #1–#2; Wild Cards #3–#4.
From 2028: Division champions receive seeds #1–#3; Wild Cards #4–#6. Seeds #1–#2 receive automatic byes to the Conference Semi-Finals.
