< BFL Home

1. League structure

Since 2025, the BFL has been organised as a 16-team league operating across the United Kingdom; and divided into two conferences - the British Confeerence and the United Conference - each containing two divisions of four teams.

Expansion to a 24-team league is under review and would introduce re-alignment into the conferences having three divisions of four teams and which will mean teams moving to new/previous divisions.

Prior to 2025, information of the division alignments can be found under the BFL Teams page.

2. League Membership

The BFL operates with a permanent cap of 24 teams, as defined in the Expansion Cap section.

This ensures a competitive and sustainable balance and maintains a clear playoffs access.

2.1 Membership Limit

The BFL shall not expand beyond 24 teams under normal league operations. This limit preserves:

The 24-team structure is the foundation of the elague's scheduling and playoff format.

2.2 Expansion Restrictions

Expansion beyond the 24-team cap is prohibited unless all of the following conditions are met:

If none of these are met, then the BFL is closed from expansion beyond the 24-team limit.

3 Teams

3.1 Team names

Naming of teams can be found under each of the Division pages.

BFL maintains strict standards for club names to esnure clarity, originality and consistency across the league. All team names must comply with the following rules.

Name Format

Each team must consist of:

3.2 Geogrpahic Requirements

The geographic portion of a team must:

Humberside represent the East Lincolnshire region which is not covered by Yorkshire Vikings depsite Hull (Humberside's location) being in Yorkshire. Sheffield is also permitted as it only represents the Sheffield region despite also being based in Yorkshire.

Both Caledonian Knights and Scottish Claymores represent Scotland. However, Scottish Claymores are a founding member of the BFL and Caledonian joined afterwards and was admitted as both teams are based in different cities and theoretically can be supported to not only represent Scotland but also Eastern (Scottish) and Western (Caledonian) regions.

3.3 Nickname restrictions

Nicknames must adhere to the following:

The following categories are prohibited:

This means use of the names similar or close to Indians, Eskimos or Redskins cannot be used due to being discontinued by their respective teams due to being deemed offensive.

3.4 Team Suitability and Stadium Capacity

To ensure professional standards, competitive integrity, and consistent fan experience across the BFL, all member clubs must meet strict suitability and stadium criteria.

These rules apply to existing clubs and expansion candidates.

Relocation teams are only applied if the stadium is not suited to requirements, i.e.reduced in capacity or a better stadium is beign built/redeveloped and would mean the etam having to relocate to a new site. The team will likely use its city or region if applicable or my change it only if their current city/region would not be suited due to the relocation.

All BFL clubs must play in a stadium with a minimum of 10,000 seated and/or standing capacity if applicable.

Sometimes, it may be necessary for a region to be represented by a city with a BFL standard stadium that is outside of the region.

4. BFL Draft

The full history of NFL affiliates assigned to BFL teams can be found by visiting the BFL Draft page. The Draft year refers to the upcoming season regardless of when the teams are announced.

2015-2026

The BFL Draft, is made up of each BFL team being assigned an NFL affiliate based on the previous NFL season’s playoff field and originally matched alphabetically by City/Region of the NFL team:

2027-onwards

NFL Affiliates top seeds are matched against the BFL top seed per conference from seeds #1-#8 from the previous season with effect from the 2026 NFL season, which replaces the previous system of matching in alphabetical order. Seeds will shown on the final standings to aid the alignment with NFL affiliates.

This means that the best AFC/NFC teams from the previous NFL season are matched against that of the teams from the previous BFL season' standings which brings an added strength of the competition to the league and means top performing teams get the best affiliation and protentially a better opportunity of qualifying for the playoffs.

Before 2025, the top six NFL affiliates were selected strictly by overall record, without using the NFL’s playoff qualification system, followed by next-best non-playoff team in each conference

4.1 Expansion Draft

The above expansion rules will be used for future expansion teams.

5. Standings

5.1 Final Standings Calculation

Final BFL standings are determined after NFL Week 11 using:

Before 2026, Points Againts (PA), Points For (PF) and Net Points (NP) were discontinued after the 2024 season.

5.2 Tie Rules

If an NFL affiliate finishes with a tie:

To date, only one affiliate tie has occurred in a season (2021 and 2025), and both resulted in an automatic win.

6. Playoffs

6.1 Overtime Procedure

The final full-time score determines the winner. If tied:

  1. Quarter-by-quarter scores are added sequentially as overtime (Q1 → Q2 → Q3 → Q4).
  2. If still tied, individual scoring plays (TD, FG, Safety) from the game week are added in order.
  3. This continues until an outright winner is determined.

There is no limit to the number of overtime scores used.

Example

2023 BFL Championship Game — tied 33–33 after regulation.
OT used 1st-quarter scores:
Caledonian Knights (3) & Sussex Pirates (7).
Final: Sussex Pirates 40–36.

6.2 Bye Weeks During Playoffs

Since the NFL expanded to a 17-game season in 2021, BFL playoff weeks may include NFL bye weeks.

Prior to 2025, Conference teams were seeded regardless of Division champions, from 2026, Division champions per conference will be given seeds #1-#2 with wildcard teams taking seeds #3-#4, this guarantees that Division champions get homefield advantage.

Seeding changes

From 2026, Division champions get seeds #1-#2 and wildcards getting seeds #3-#4. Division Champions no longer get automatic byes but always host Semi-Finals.

Division Champions received automatic byes into the Division Finals up to and including the 2024 BFL Season.

Prior to 2026, Conference seeding was based on record and not Division champions but has been amended to award home field advantage for the Division champions.
