XFL was the 3rd incarnation of the league, in which it played 1 season in 2001 and part of a season in 2020 due to the Coronovirus Pandemic.
The XFL was made up of 8 teams, including 5 returning cities from the shortened 2020 season and 3 teams relocating to Las Vegas, Orlando and San Antonio.
Las Vegas and Orlando previously had teams in the 2001 XFL and San Antonio previously hosted a team in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019, another league that played a part season.
The sole 2023 season ran from February to April, with each team playing a ten-game regular season, and four progressing to the playoffs to crown a season champion.

2024 SEASON
For the 2024 season, announced on the on 28 September 2023, the XFL merged with the USFL to form the United Football League (UFL) with the Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders and the San Antonio Brahmas joining. Houston Gamblers were due to also join but have been rebranded as the Houston Roughnecks.
