San Antonio Texans

San Antonio Texans (San Antonio,TX,USA) relocated from the Sacramento Gold Miners for their sole 1995 season, and were part of the final season of the CFL's failed expansion into the USA in the mid-1990s and played in the South Division with fellow American teams Baltimore Stallions,Birmingham Barracudas, Memphis Mad Dogs and Shreveport Pirates.

Unlike the other American teams, the Texans' home stadium of the Alamodome had a playing surface large enough to accomodate the much larger Canadian Football field. To accomodate the field,as the stadium had been designed primarily for American Football, its sideline seats could be retracted so the surface was wide enough for the full 65-yard width of a standard CFL field and end zone seats could be removed for the 150-yard length of the CFL field.

In the 1995 playoffs, the Texans became the only team to host a CFL playoff game ever held in an American city other than the Baltimore Stallions.

In 1996,the Baltimore Stallions relocated to Montreal and would become the 3rd version of the Montreal Alouettes. With the Stallions now back in Montreal, the Texans' nearest opponent would have been over 1,400 miles away in Hamilton. Team owner Fred Anderson had also considered relocating to another Canadian city,as several had been interested in the move, but none had suitable stadiums and the team subsequently folded.
