NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NFL) began in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association and was renamed in 1922. Four All-America Football Conference teams (San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts) joined in 1949. Between 1966-1969, the American Football League and NFL Champions met in the Super Bowl, before both leagues merged to form an expanded National Football League in 1970.
It currently has 32 teams with the Houston Texans joining in 2002. Teams are based in 30 US cities with two in Los Angeles (Chargers and Rams) and two teams representing New York but based in New Jersey (Giants and Jets). Each team is allocated college football players through the annual Draft held every April.
BRITISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE (BFL) was introduced in 2015 by Alex Thomas, administrator of AMT GRIDIRON, and uses 'affiliated' NFL teams to collate its seasons.

SUPER BOWL |
---|
NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (1933-1969) |
It began following the 1966 season (not adopting the Super Bowl name until the following season) and was originally played between the American Football League and NFL Champions before both leagues merged in 1970.
The champion receives the Lombardi Trophy which is named after the 2x Super Bowl champions Green Bay Packers' Head Coach Vince Lombardi (above).
Please note that the year shown is when it took place and crowns the Champion for the previous year/ so the 2015 Super Bowl (XLVII) is for the 2014 season. Super Bowl L was called Super Bowl 50 for the 2015 Season only.
7 teams (Dallas/Denver/Green Bay/Miami/New England/Pittsburgh & San Francisco) have won 2 consecutive Super Bowls but 6 have come close to winning their 3rd (Dallas/Green Bay/Miami/New England/Pittsburgh & San Francisco). Buffalo lost 4 consecutive titles (XXV-XXVIII) and both Denver (XXI & XXII) & Minnesota (VIII & IX) have lost 2 consecutive titles.
27/52 have been held in 3 cities; New Orleans (10x)/Greater Miami (10 times) and Greater Los Angeles (7x). The winning city is not required to host the game in the same stadium that its NFL team uses and this has happened in 9 Super Bowls. Los Angeles's last 5 Super Bowls were played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena/CA but this has not happened since 1993. They are generally played in outdoor stadiums with an expected average daily temperature of less than 50oF (10oC) unless the stadium has a fixed or retractable roof) and only 5 have been played in northern cities like Detroit area (5x - Detroit and Pontiac)/Minneapolis/MN (2x) and Indianapolis/IN (1x).
Only two teams have won their home Super Bowl: Los Angeles Rams (Super Bowl LVI) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Super Bowl LV).
With the league moving to 17 regular-season games in 2021/New Orleans were to host Super Bowl LVIII but this was awarded to Las Vegas and New Orleans will host Super Bowl LIX instead as this would have clashed with the Mardi Gras.
Please note that the host year refers to when that city/region hosted the Super Bowl/and follows the previous season so 2022 refers to the 2021 season.

Four teams (Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans & Jacksonville Jaguars) have appeared in the playoffs but have yet to play in the Super Bowl.
There were no Playoffs held prior to 1933, and from 1966 to the merger with the AFL in 1970 the NFL Champion played the AFL Champion in the Super Bowl. The NFL Championship Game was re-named the National Football Conference Championship Game from 1970.
